The Downs Estate TMO (DEMO) is a Tenant Management Organisation managing an estate of 210 homes on behalf of the London Borough of Hackney. It’s a relatively small estate on Amhurst Road between Mare Street and Stoke Newington on the edge of the lovely green expanse of Hackney Downs. It’s a typical example of the 1930s red brick social housing created by the old London County Council that can be seen all over the capital.

 

In 2006, the residents on the estate opted to manage the estate themselves for the Council. A Board of Directors was elected by tenants and leaseholders and all of them are residents themselves. We employ 5 staff – a TMO Manager, Housing Officer, 2 caretaker/cleaners and a part-time book-keeper. The office is on the estate providing an immediate local contact point for any queries or reporting or issues.

 

The estate has seen investment under the Decent Homes scheme over the last few years and we continue to work with the London Borough of Hackney to ensure the estate is well maintained.
